NCEC Candidate Center - Kansas

Kansas

Congressional filing deadline: June 2008
Congressional primary: August 2008

President (6 Electoral Votes)

Kansas is still considered no-man's-land for Democrats in terms of presidential politics, and there is little to no chance that this will change in 2008. John Kerry failed to win the most liberal district in the state (KS-3) in 2004.

U.S. Senate - Pat Roberts (Rep)

Republican Senator Pat Roberts is up for reelection in 2008. This race is not considered to be of particular interest to Democrats despite our recent success in the governor’s race. Roberts ran without Democratic opposition in 2002, and it is unlikely that he will receive strong opposition in 2008. Former Representative Jim Slattery has expressed interest in challenging Roberts recently, but not decision has been made. Robrets currently has more than $2.7 million available for the race.

Pat Roberts (Rep) - Incumbent
Chuck Banks (Rep) - Former US Attorney, 2006 Lieutenant Governor Candidate and 1982 Congressional Nominee
Bill Halter (Dem) - Lieutenant Governor, Former Social Security Commissioner and Economist
Jim Slattery (Dem) - Former Congressman, Attorney, Lobbyist and 1994 Governor Nominee
Rebekah Kennedy (Green) - Attorney, Progressive Activist and 2006 Attorney General Nominee

1st District - Jerry Moran (Rep)

Central and west, Salina, Dodge City

Jerry Moran (Rep) - Incumbent

2nd District - Nancy Boyda (Dem)

East, Topeka, Leavenworth

Nancy Boyda's victory over incumbent Jim Ryun was one of the most unexpected of 2006. The Republicans are sure to mount a significant challenge in this district in 2008, as the race was decided by less than 3 percent. This seat is considered one of the most vulnerable for Democrats in 2008. Prior to 2006, Democrats hadn't experienced a great deal of success in this district, with their House candidate receiving just 41.2 percent of the vote in 2004, up from 36.9 percent in 2002. Ryun will seek to reclaim his seat in 2008, and Kansas State Treasurer Lynn Jenkins recently announced that she will also run for the GOP.

Nancy Boyda (Dem) - Incumbent
Lynn Jenkins (Rep) - State Treasurer, Former State Representative and Accountant
Jim Ryun (Rep) - Former Congressman, Businessman and Olympic Track Medalist

3rd District - Dennis Moore (Dem)

East, greater Kansas City

The third district in Kansas is the Democratic stronghold in the state. Representative Dennis Moore has consistently expanded his victory margin over the last few cycles, but any Democrat in Kansas can be considered vulnerable at any given time. However, it is unlikely that this seat will change hands in 2008.

Dennis Moore (Dem) - Incumbent
John Burnett (Dem) - Attorney
Nick Jordan (Rep) - State Senator and Businessman
Joel Balam (Ind) - Court Translator and Chaplain

4th District - Todd Tiahrt (Rep)

South central, Wichita

Todd Tiahrt (Rep) - Incumbent
