Congressional filing deadline: March 2008 (non-incumbents)
Congressional primary: Tuesday, May 13, 2008
President (5 Electoral Votes)
George W. Bush won Nebraska by 33 percent in 2004, so baring a miraculous turn of events this state will remain firmly in the GOP column in 2008.
U.S. Senate - Chuck Hagel (Rep)
On September 10th Senator Chuck Hagel announced that he is going to retire at the end of this term, which creates another competitive Senate race. Former Republican Governor and U.S. Agriculture secretary Mike Johanns won the GOP primary over challenger Pat Flynn in May. On the Democratic side, 2006 Congressional nominee Scott Kleeb won the right to face Johanns in the general election. Kleeb ran an unexpectedly close race in Nebraska's third district in 2006, and his ability to attract Republican votes gives reason to believe that this seat will be in play in '08.
