Nevada
Presidential caucuses: Saturday, January 19, 2008
Congressional filing deadline: May 16, 2008
Congressional primary: Tuesday, August 12, 2008
President (5 Electoral Votes)
Nevada is receiving newfound attention in the presidential campaign due to the movement of its primary to near the front of the line. According to recent polls Hillary Clinton holds a comfortable lead over Barack Obama for the Democratic nomination. The GOP race in Nevada is a bit more cloudy with some polls favoring Mitt Romney and others favoring former Senator Fred Thompson. The growing population of Las Vegas will increasingly put this state in play in the general election. In 2004, John Kerry lost the state by just 21,000 votes and with Democratic efforts focused on capturing states in the west Nevada will be a target. If the pro-Democrat political environment persists this state could go blue for the first time since 1996.
